Belbo is a character from Umberto Eco's novel "The Foucault Pendulum" (1988). He is one of the three main protagonists - a somewhat naive, idealistic, and impressionable editor at a Milan publishing house who becomes involved in creating an elaborate fictional conspiracy theory. Belbo is portrayed as earnest and imaginative, but also vulnerable to manipulation. Along with his colleagues Casaubon and Diotallevi, he participates in the development of "The Plan" - an invented conspiracy that they initially intend as a game or intellectual exercise. However, as the story progresses, this fictional construct begins to have real and dangerous consequences. The character represents themes of innocence corrupted by knowledge and the blurred line between fiction and reality that is central to Eco's novel.
